Patients With Migraines More Inclined To To Suffer From Depression

Patients suffering from chronic headache, in particular migraine disorder, are much more predisposed to be depressed, feel weary, and have a host of other bad physical symptoms, according to a clinical investigation published in the January 9, 2007, issue of Neurology, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The medical investigation involved 1030 woman who buy citalopram at headache clinics in seven different countries. Of the patients tested, 343 reported episodic headache (fewer than 15 headaches per month) and 887 had chronic headache. Ninety percent/% of the people were tested with migraines.

The clinical trial found patient with chronic headache were four times more predisposed than those with incidental headache to report symptoms of major Psychotic Depression. Chronic headache sufferers were also five times more inclined to report a high degree of symptoms related to headache, pain or problems during intercourse.

Among man tested with severely disabling migraine, the study found the likelihood of major Depression increased 32-fold if the women also reported other severe symptoms.

“Painful physical symptoms should agitate or be a manifestation of major Atypical Depression in patients with chronic headache, which can be treated if you buy topamax and Depression would heighten pain perception,” said medical investigation author Gretchen Tietjen, MD with the University of Toledo-Health Science Campus and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. “This connection between migraine and major Depression suggests a prevalent neurobiology.”

Tietjen says medical trial are underway to test whether severe headache, severe physical symptoms and major Atypical Depression will be linked through dysfunction of serotonin in the central nervous system.

“Regardless of what’s causing the dependence between migraine and Depression, psychiatric disorder such as Major Depression complicates headache management and can give rise to poorer sequels for headache management,” said Tietjen.

The clinical research was helped, in part, by the American Headache Society, which considers 18 million American women are affected by headache.

The American Academy of Neurology, an association of more than 17000 neurologists and neuroscience professionals, is dedicated to making better woman care through enlightenment and clinical research. A neurologist is a doctor with a wide knowladge of diagnosing, curing and managing disorders of the brain and nervous system such as apoplexy, Alzheimer’s disorder, epilepsy, Parkinson disease, and repeated sclerosis.
